What Is Sketch-It Sunday?
Sketch-It! Sunday occurs the first Sunday in October each year and takes place in your own building, during your own service, and under the supervision of your own pastoral leadership team. Keep everything the same — all you have to do is consider intentionally engaging the visual learners in your church family through a simple activity.
Sketch-It! Sunday happens once a year when we invite congregations across the state of Pennsylvania to take their notes visually. We live in a visual society and the church has a long history of communicating the stories of the Bible in pictures. We want to embrace that heritage. There is an entire demographic of individuals who learn best visually. If we care about them and their ability to understand the Gospel of Christ, we need to care about how they learn. Partner with us during Sketch-It! Sunday and engage these learners.
The Beauty of This Event
It’s easy to do. You don’t need to change your sermon, your worship, or your order of service. We only ask that you do two things: (1) Please provide paper and a writing utensil to your congregation as they enter your worship space. (2) During the announcement portion of your service, share that today you are encouraging everyone to take their notes visually.
There are options. While this activity will be life-giving to the creatives in your midst, there is a chance that not everyone will feel inclined to draw their notes. For those that are more analytical in nature, encourage them to still take written notes and benefit from the activity. Thankfully, for those who choose not to participate at all, they will still be blessed by your regular Sunday morning worship experience.
It connects your local congregation to Christ’s larger Church. Believers all across Pennsylvania will be taking part in Sketch It! Sunday on the same date. While your theological flavor remains distinct to your congregation, this exercise shows concern for the ways creatives learn and emphasizes our call to make Christ known.
